children's vision symptoms

Vision is the sense that children rely on the most to discover the world around them. It is reported that approximately 80% of learning occurs through the eyes.

Symptoms that may indicate that your child may have a vision problem:

  • Headaches - often caused by a child straining to focus.
  • Redness or tearing of the eyes.
  • Rubbing the eyes repeatedly.
  • Tip of nose almost touches the book when reading.
  • Winking - closing one eye on a regular basis may be a sign of double vision or a blurred image in one eye.
  • Frequent Blinking - squeezing the eyes shut or rubbing the eyes are all customary signs of poor focusing.
  • Eye misalignment - any turning of the eye, no matter how slight can result in double vision.
  • Behavior problems - Visual difficulties can cause a child to become frustrated. Consequently, a child can become mislabeled as unmotivated, hyperactive or a slow learner.

Common Vision Problems and treatments:

  • Amblyopia (Lazy Eye) - About 5% of children are affected. The brain shuts down one visual pathway because one eye has poor vision and is causing a distorted image. It is very important to detect and treat early as the visual system is complete by the age of 8 and can no longer be treated.
  • Strabismus - The eyes do not align properly under normal conditions.
  • Accommodation Problems - An inability to focus on print for long periods of time, causing blurry vision and headaches.
  • Refractive errors - Hyperopia (far-sightedness), Myopia (near-sightedness) and Astigmatism (an uneven curvature of the cornea). Effectively treated with glasses or contacts.
